2011 Semper Fidelis Award

Ms. Julia Stewart, Chairman and CEO of  DineEquity, Inc

Julia A. Stewart, a nearly 40-year veteran of the restaurant industry, serves as chairman and CEO of DineEquity, Inc. DineEquity is the world’s largest full-service restaurant company, franchising and operating restaurants under the Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar and IHOP Restaurant brands.

Since joining the Company in December 2001, Ms. Stewart has demonstrated proven expertise and leadership in brand revitalization and brand positioning. Beginning in 2001, she implemented significant shifts in strategy that resulted in revitalizing the IHOP brand, strengthening its franchising position and improving the overall financial performance of the business. As a result, IHOP system-wide sales have more than doubled over the past ten years via robust franchise restaurant development and the improved performance of existing franchised IHOP restaurants. IHOP is now the market share leader in family dining.

In 2007, Ms. Stewart led the acquisition of Applebee’s International, Inc., creating the world’s largest full service restaurant company with nearly 3,500 locations. Ms. Stewart is utilizing a focused, strategic, consumer-centric brand evaluation and revitalization process, similar to the one successfully employed at IHOP, to restore Applebee’s to the leadership position in casual dining. From enhanced marketing and service initiatives to menu innovation and improved restaurant ambience and décor, Applebee’s is being positioned to effectively differentiate itself among the competitive set and regain sustainable system momentum. Ms. Stewart also believes that franchising provides the company with a unique competitive advantage, as such, Applebee’s plans to franchise the vast majority of company-operated restaurants.

Prior to joining DineEquity, Mrs. Stewart served as President of the domestic division of Applebee's International, Inc. Before Applebee's, Ms. Stewart held several key executive positions with Taco Bell Corporation, including National Vice President of Franchise and License and Western Region Vice President of Operations. Over a 15-year period prior to Taco Bell, she held various key marketing positions with Stuart Anderson's Black Angus/Cattle Company Restaurants, Spoons Grill & Bar, Burger King Corp. and Carl's Jr. Restaurants.

Ms. Stewart is a founding member of the Women’s Foodservice Forum and the recipient of numerous industry awards, serves on the Board of Directors of Avery Dennison, is a member of the UCLA Anderson School of Business Board of Visitors, and serves on the Board of Directors of Children’s Bureau of Southern California. Ms. Stewart and her family reside in the Los Angeles area.

2011 John Wooden Sportsman Award

Mr. Dave Stockton, PGA Champion Golfer and President & CEO of Stockton Golf

Being that his father, Gail, owned a sporting goods store in the town where Dave was born and raised, it is of no surprise that Dave was a sports enthusiast and played basketball, baseball as well as golf in his youth. A surfing accident causing a back injury deterred Dave from playing baseball and he turned his focus instead to golf.

In addition to operating his business, Dave’s father was also a Club Professional and even played with the likes of Walter Hagen during Hagen’s visit to the San Bernardino area. It has been told many times that Dave could be seen on the practice green at Arrowhead Country Club by his friends both as they drove off on their adventure, as well as on their way back!

In the late 50’s, there was little money to be made as a Tour professional and Dave’s father feared he would not be able to earn a good living. Against his father’s wishes, the two-time NCAA All-American graduated from USC , rounded up sponsors and headed out on Tour, marrying beauty queen, Catherine Hales not long after. Dave’s putting prowess and talent around the greens led to 11 victories on Tour, including the 1970 and 1976 PGA Championships. Despite their clear disagreement on Dave’s career choice, Gail followed Dave on the Tour and was Dave’s only teacher until his death in 1983. His younger son Ron took on the role of instructor, always observing, taking notes and advising his father on his game.

Dave easily added 14 Champions Tour victories to his list of achievements, often times with Ron on the bag. Son, Dave Jr., followed in his Dad’s footsteps and turned pro in 1990 and debuted on the PGA Tour in 1994. He played on both the PGA and Nationwide Tour for 10 years, winning twice on the Nike Tour and accruing several top ten finishes on the PGA Tour. The three Stocktons made history in March of 1996 when they became the first family to have members playing on all three Tours on the same weekend.
